Position Yourself For a Promotion

... even if you're not sure you're ready

Learn how to confidently show your true self and be seen as a respected leader without feeling like an impostor, having 2 am night sweats about minor mistakes, or having to join the Old Boys’ Club.

Oh, and did I mention? We'll break some barriers along the way.

You've heard it before.

"All you need to do to advance your career is..."

stand out.

speak up.

get noticed.

But that’s not easy when you're overworked (and underpaid) and  getting stuck worrying about other people’s expectations.

You’re smart & accomplished, and you worked hard (and went into debt!) to get your graduate degree to be an expert in your field.  You've been working for over a decade and you have a solid reputation, because you always knock your projects out of the park.

Your boss tells you how impressive your work is, you feel good about your relationships with your colleagues, and you dream of rising to executive level.

BUT you’re stressed from working way too many hours trying to prove you have what it takes, when you simply want to feel accepted for who you are.

Tell me if this sounds familiar

  • Intellectually, you know people value your opinion... but you still hold back in meetings, nervous to say something wrong.
  • You have a good relationship with your boss.... but you still can't stop your mind from going over (and over and over) even the tiniest mistake, anxious about what your next performance review will say.
  • You keep on top of your work, but you struggle to prioritize and often feel overwhelmed, working long hours to make sure everything gets done.
  • You know you have a killer resume, but you lay awake at night worrying you’ll get stuck in your current role and never get the respect (or higher pay) you know you deserve.
  • You do great work, but when things hit the fan, you find yourself pacing back and forth outside, wondering if this is when they figure out that you’re actually a total fraud.
  • You make time for family, friends and yoga, but you feel guilty about applying for a promotion because you don't think it's possible to be a leader while still making time for all your other priorities.
  • You want people to take you seriously at work, but you don’t want to come across as a b****.
  • You know that you’re smart, capable and accomplished.
  • You know you have the qualities that would make you a great leader.
  • You know that it’s time for you to feel that same confidence in every professional situation.

And you're ready to make it happen with the RISE Leadership Bootcamp.

Here’s what professional life will look like after joining the RISE Leadership Bootcamp.

Calm

You’re fully present in your personal life because you'll know that things at work are under control.

Confident

You speak up in meetings & take risks to advance your career because you'll know how to react when impostor syndrome creeps in.

Authentic

You feel comfortable taking on a leadership role while staying true to your personality because you'll know how to be yourself when influencing the people around you.

You might feel like advancing your career requires reading all the leadership books, getting someone older & wiser to give you advice, or going back to school for an MBA.

I felt that way too, thinking I needed another piece of paper to prove I was good enough to be a leader.

Then I discovered that being a leader is more than learning theory in a classroom - it’s about :

  • Showing up in the real world with YOUR unique leadership strengths.
  • Having the confidence to maintain healthy boundaries that set you up for success (personally and professionally) so promotions don’t threaten to take over your life.
  • Working through your fears of failure and success, so you avoid self-sabotage.
  • Loosening the knot of fears around being seen and judged so you can self-advocate and voice your best ideas.

That’s when the good stuff happens.

I had my pick from a range of opportunities

I had secured a dream job in Washington DC but was aware that I had only a limited few years to establish myself in that job, consolidate my career and position myself to have opportunities in my field when I returned to my home country.

I struggled to balance my own career needs and long term goals with the day to day demands of the role, and needed help prioritizing my time.

I felt that I had too many things to do and not enough time. I also had a young family, so I needed to be super focused with the limited time that I had.

Liz helped me identify my strengths, helped me plan, and provided the external accountability & support I needed to stay focused on my goals.

Thanks to her support, when I returned to my home country, I had my pick from a range of opportunities.

I got the promotion!

I felt stuck in my career. I was doing the work of a position without the authority or the benefits, and I didn't believe that I had what it took to be officially in the position. I felt angry and frustrated.

The tools in Liz's course helped me to connect with myself, my purpose and my values. After finishing, I was not only clearer in where I wanted my career to go, but I was able to lead myself and set boundaries that led me to get the promotion.

I now feel empowered and capable to do the work. I learned that in order to be a successful leader I needed to be myself. I also feel happier as I balance my roles and help my team to do the same as we get the results.

I'm a better manager

I was having imposter syndrome from a lack of confidence in my skillset, presentation, and ability to communicate with people at higher levels.

It felt exhausting and impossible to overcome.

I enjoyed the group approach coaching - we each did individual work and also brought our own experiences to the group.

I now feel much less anxiety and more comfort in my role and what I bring to the table.

I know that I am good at what I do and that I bring a lot to the table, which has made me a better manager.

This is why I created
The RISE Leadership Bootcamp

A leadership coaching program to help you build confidence and courage so you can show up with an authentic presence and rise in your 9 to 5.

The RISE Leadership Bootcamp is all about giving you practical steps to show up with influential presence in ANY professional situation so you can make a positive contribution and be recognized as a leader.

You’ll get rid of the stress and anxiety at work and get your career moving so you can finally break through the ceiling AND still have time for fun, family, and yoga.

It might seem like you’re already doing everything possible and your only options are to wait for your boss to notice your good work, or get another degree another that proves you’re ready to move up.

But you are ready. Right now. Just as you are.

Lighter and freer to be myself

I was stuck in my career, not knowing where I wanted to go. I anchored on having one set plan, but that never felt 'right' to me.

I can describe a sensation of feeling like I was tuning in more clearly on a static radio station.

The clarity I got from Liz made me feel lighter and freer to be myself. I love the imagery Liz uses. I also appreciate how she includes people from different countries (and time zones).

She's flexible and inclusive, and I benefit from learning from others' perspectives in her group coaching. I have more patience with myself, and more compassion. I feel more comfortable as me, even when I don't have the answers to every question in my career.

Working with Liz, I felt shifts in my energy. I would almost describe it as stagnation breaking up and I am feeling lighter.

The moment I decided that I needed to work with a leadership coach, I was outside pacing and walking back and forth, almost out of breath from anxiety and stress. I realized how much the situation was having a psychological and physical effect on my person and knew I needed to get out of the situation.

Working with Liz, I felt shifts in my energy. I would almost describe it as stagnation breaking up and I am feeling lighter. It’s like yoga for the brain!

Now I’m feeling confident about my leadership, my boss has noticed and is expanding my role to take on more responsibilities!

Hi, I'm Liz!

I get it, I’ve been there.

I came blazing out of high school and university with top marks and entered the work world with big plans. I quickly learned that there was so much more to success than being a high achiever.

I still remember the day I walked back to my computer after struggling to connect with one of my colleagues who just didn’t seem to care about my opinion.

I sat there, staring at my ever-growing inbox, and I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. I spent hours overthinking what I was doing and what people thought about me.

Turns out, I wasn't doing anything "wrong".

Through studying leadership development, becoming a certified leadership coach and spearheading a Lean In Leadership Skills circle, I figured out that some of us face leadership and communication challenges because we get stuck between two problems:

1. Impostor syndrome or lack of confidence.

2. Unconscious bias, unstated expectations and impostor messages that we receive in the workplace.

This is why I created the the RISE Leadership Bootcamp - it’s a unique program designed to help you tap into your natural leadership style so you banish impostor thoughts --- while recognizing that there are very real unconscious biases and invisible barriers out there.

I now feel like I can give strong first impressions without having to sacrifice my values

I came to coaching because I felt like I wasn't giving strong first impressions as a leader, due to a combination of warmth, friendliness, my petite size, and my gender.

I was worried that I might discover that there is not much I can do to address my concern.

After working with Liz, I now have a tangible but manageable task ("homework") to work on that will help me prepare for future first encounters and for developing a more accurate, fair, and truthful view of myself in the workplace.

What I really appreciated about Liz was feeling like I was being truly heard and understood. She was obviously listening very attentively to the things I was describing, so much so that she was able to read between the lines and redirect my attention to some important details that I was missing.

I now feel like I can give strong first impressions without having to sacrifice values that are important to me -- this was my goal, and I'm delighted to have arrived at it.

I wasn't satisfied with my work-life balance and felt I was just living for the weekends.

Before working with Liz, I wasn't satisfied with my work-life balance and felt I was just living for the weekends. I knew that I wanted a change, but I wasn't sure how to bring more balance, happiness, enjoyment and satisfaction into my life. It was at this point that a life coach, Liz, came into my life, at just the right time.

At first I was concerned that I might not have the time to commit or that the cost of such sessions would be too much.

After speaking with Liz, I gained a better understanding of what life coaches are and how they can help you achieve success in whatever your endeavors may be. I really felt like this was the missing piece that I needed to help me achieve the balance I was searching for.

I decided to jump in and haven't looked back. Not only has Liz helped me to better understand myself, but she has helped me to achieve successes in both my personal and professional life. I've not only had a coach, but a cheerleader which has propelled me to a happier place, with a healthier work life balance.

The time commitment and the cost of sessions, that I was initially concerned about, were worth the investment. The investment in myself is paying dividends, my only regret is not having signed up with a life coach sooner!

While I enjoyed my work, it wasn’t fulfilling me the way it had in the past

Fifteen years into a successful professional career spanning two fields across two levels of government, I found myself at a crossroads. The time had come to determine what the next phase of my professional life would look like. I could start seriously pursuing promotional opportunities, but I felt a nagging hesitation.

While I enjoyed my work, it wasn’t fulfilling me the way it had in the past. I felt like there were more challenges out there for me to tackle and that the time might be right for me to consider a different path.

I had always wanted to be a writer, and had a small personal blog for a few years. I had been thinking about making a serious effort at freelance and fiction writing, but had never really been able to create a plan for what a professional writing endeavour would look like.

It was at around that time that I learned that Liz was offering personal leadership and development coaching. Even though I wasn’t really sure what to expect, I thought that working with a coach would be a great opportunity to explore where my strengths and motivations really lie.

I had thought that working with a coach meant going through the coach’s specific leadership program, which would have been great. But working with Liz was actually much better than that.

One of my biggest surprises was how much she tailored the experience to me and my needs right from the beginning. She determined what level of prodding and feedback I wanted, and she was really fantastic at listening to me speak and picking up on things that I needed to explore more.

She offered resources and exercises that were helpful and useful. Most importantly, she is both professional and extremely warm and kind at the same time. I had some very vulnerable moments, and Liz treated them with the care and respect that I needed.

Coming out of the experience, I have a clearer vision for how I am going to pursue a writing career, and I have had the confidence to take the concrete steps to get started. I don’t feel “stuck” any more, I know that I have options and where I’m going from here.

I highly recommend coaching with Liz, for whatever goals you want to pursue.

I'm in a new position (promotion, created for me) and got a pay rise!

Having recently turned 40 and after ten years with the same management consulting firm, I was beginning to get itchy feet.

I felt overworked, underappreciated, and started to wonder if greener fields existed perhaps in another job or field. I looked around for other jobs, but nothing was feeling quite right and I felt torn about whether to leave my current job, just for the sake of leaving and making a change. There are many things that are great about my current job - including colleagues.

However, there are so many resources out there telling you to push yourself and try new things, and I always associated this with a major change - new job, new city, new me...

Many of the resources Liz provided helped me think about options to be more content without jumping into a new job somewhere unknown, doing something I didn't really want. I re-considered my options to stay with my current employer. I re-considered my attitude towards work. I opened up my thinking on what else I could do with my company.

I ended up having an open conversation with my colleagues about how I was feeling, which was great for everyone. I'm in a new position (promotion, created for me) and got a pay rise! As a result, I look forward to starting a new position, tailored to the needs for the company and my own interests. It will mean new challenges and growth opportunities, but keeping all the things I love about my current situation.

Thanks for the support Liz!

I will be coming back as a manager after my maternity leave!

I had been working for the same organization for the last four years. I have consistently had great reviews and received salary increases. However, that has not come with a senior title. I was struggling with having lots of responsibilities without authority.

I was pregnant and about to hit my third trimester, and thought it may pose a challenge in asking for a higher title. One of my family members did not think I should ask for a promotion since I was about to have a baby and that I should focus on my pregnancy and baby.

I had a performance review, which went really well, and I was mulling over it for weeks. I got a merit-based salary increase, and I wanted to advocate myself to also get a promotion. I decided to schedule a meeting with my manager to ask for a promotion.

Liz's process was helpful for me to get clarity of my goals and how I wanted to structure the conversation with my supervisor. Liz talked me through all the scenarios that could occur during the conversation with my manager.

Going into the conversation, I was well prepared and confident about getting the promotion.

My manager was supportive and said that I will be coming back as a manager after my maternity leave!

If you are mid-career and are looking to transition into a senior role, you'd greatly benefit from working with Liz. She has very positive energy, and she is able to motivate and instill confidence in people.

Liz has got your back!

My life was very successful, by most people’s definition, but at times overwhelming

Before I started working with Liz my life was very successful, by most people’s definition, but at times overwhelming. I suffered from a misery of choice.

Admittedly, they were mostly great choices, but sorting through what to do and what to focus on was paralyzing me.

Engaging with a coach seemed like just another commitment and that was causing me to hesitate. But what is clear now is that Liz was able to help me discover my priorities, plan my next actions, and she held me accountable to make sure I followed through. Looking back I don’t know how I would have fared had it not been for Liz’s superb coaching and thoughtful insights.

Now I feel, focused, my choices are clear, and my energy has been lifted knowing that I am heading down the right path toward the most important goals of my life.

Liz has a unique ability to listen, understand, and guide someone to discover their own answers; yet she offers strong encouragement and gentle support that is such an important part of the process.

If you are considering coaching, I highly recommend working with Liz. She "gets it" and she can help anyone make progress in their life.

From Zero Balance to Clarity & Purpose

When I started working with Liz, I had such a lack of time for myself.

Zero balance.
Overworked.
Not empowered.

It was starting to wear on my mental state and affecting my relationship with my husband. I was unhappy at work and needed a change.

Working with Liz helped me become aware of my thoughts and how the emotions that stem from these thoughts affect my relationship with others and myself. She's amazing! Not only is she super warm and easy to talk to, she always somehow remains professional and has such an uncanny ability to see your “blind spots”. She shares them with you in a non-judgemental way that helps you be even more aware and accountable for your own actions.

Highly highly recommend working with Liz if you are looking for someone to not only help you achieve more clarity and purpose, but to help get you out of your own way. Thank you, Liz!

Mimi

I was struggling with pushing back with my supervisors when they were pushing for layoffs.

I was really uncomfortable with what I was hearing from those higher up than me about a downturn in our industry and how they thought that needed to be handled in terms of personnel.

After the session with Liz I felt better about my role in making these decisions and had a plan for how to push back appropriately to advocate for my team.

Liz was phenomenal at helping me feel ready to address the issues I am facing right now, and also really helped me feel empowered to find the answers within myself for future issues I encounter. I was really impressed with Liz in the session.

Thank you, again, Liz, for helping me through a rough time - and for following up with that podcast recommendation. It really helped!

Liz gave me my evenings and weekends back!

Before we worked together, I was overwhelmed - I was working a lot and was struggling to prioritize.

I had so much to do and sometimes felt paralyzed by it all.

My perfectionism meant I had a hard time delegating, because I worried what would happen if I gave up control.

I now have clarity around how to prioritize, and I've been able to take time off to spend with my family!

I was tired of tipping from being either quiet and tentative, or overcompensating by using a voice that wasn't authentically mine.

Imagine this - you are in a high-power meeting, and you are calmly and accurately presenting three key points to the organization's top decision makers. You are mid-way through your first key point and one of your peers interrupts you, and states, "What Katherine is trying to say is....", and your peer begins to talk over you, and what he is saying is completely wrong.

What is your initial reaction, Do you want to go off on a tangent? Begin to speak louder, faster, and risk saying the same thing three different ways? Or perhaps freeze and then lose the attention of the room? All of the reactions are understandable, and likely to occur to many women in any meeting, on any given workday. These events occurred to me, and I was tired of tipping from being either quiet and tentative, or overcompensating by using a voice that wasn't authentically mine.

As a result of working with Liz, I have found my voice and built my self-confidence. I identified the "old stories" I had continuously told myself that had been holding me back. I have new habits that are now my success formula for preparing for meetings, and preventing and responding to interruptions.

I owe Liz a big "Thank You"! Working with Liz is a positive, exciting and rewarding experience. Liz is my trusted advisor!

I was amazed at how quickly I was able to resolve some of my biggest challenges

I was professionally successful, with a loving partner and great friendships.

But I still felt conflicted inside, like I was trying to do everything well, so I couldn’t focus on what was most important.

Our sessions always lead to incredible breakthroughs, and I was amazed at how quickly I was able to resolve some of my biggest challenges.

I realized that it’s like having all the perks of a close friend or mentor who is rooting for you 100%, but who brings a third party perspective and who ONLY focuses on what YOU want.

She has crafted her art

I appreciate the clarity, focus, and actionable leadership development from my discussions with Liz.

She has crafted her art, so well honed by active listening and coaching expertise, along with evidence-based research in emotional intelligence, leadership, and women's career development.

Even after one conversation, I have already discovered the change to be visible to myself, family, and work members.
